Are there any lovers of gardening in the forum? We have a large vegetable garden every year. So far, we've not been very lucky this year. First we had too much rain, then it was dry for a week, then too much rain again. The slugs are having a ball, eating any young vegetable plant they can find. They even ate the young carrot plants.

The cucumber beetles are literally destroying everything in the cucumber family, cukes, butternut squash, pumpkins, zucchini, watermelon, canatloupe, we pretty much have nothing left.
We do use row covers but we don't have enough of them so we have to expose more than 90% of our plants to the darn bugs ๐Ÿ™ Years ago, I never had cucumber beetles but in recent years they've been all over the plants.

More rain coming soon, which makes me fear the tomato plants will get blight.

To top it off, we've been having woodchucks peeking in. They haven't figured out yet how to get over or under the fence, but that's probably just a matter of time. Things aren't looking good so far this year. I hope that others have more luck.

It's also been a cold spring, so nothing is growing well. Gardening seems like a gable at times.

Some things that work and some things that don't work...

To keep wild animals out of your garden, I've always been told that moth balls will do the trick. One year I went to the stores and bought all the moth balls I could find. I put them all around my garden. The smell was so bad I could only be in there for about 10 minutes on end to weed, and then I had to get out to take a few deep breaths. The animals still came in ๐Ÿ™‚

Hair: A friend of mine is a hairdresser, and she'd give me the hair she cut. I would put it around my pumpkin plant because I had been told that it keeps the animals away, but you have to replace the hair each time it has rained. I did that, and nothing touched my pumpkins. But once after a rain, I didn't have any hair, my pumpkins were gong the next day. Not sure if that was coincidence or not ๐Ÿ™‚

Beer will attract and drown the slugs. (At least they die happily drunk). This one appears to be true. This is the first year I use beer in the garden, and it seems to work, I catch dozens of slugs every day. They become chicken feed in the end.
It's not true that slugs won't go over copper. Don't believe it. I tried it and they slid right over it, and to my plants.

Not everybody has a yard that they can put a vegetable garden in. I live in an apartment. I grow tomatoes, onions, carrots and peppers in milk jugs that I cut the tops off of and filled with potting soil, though, and it works fine. The funky part is that the carrots pretty much started out as those nubbins you wind up with when you chop carrots for stew and stuff. Normally most people throw them out, but if you plant them, they can usually grow again.

Don't forget to get tickets to go see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Though if you haven't seen Vol. 1 yet, what are you waiting for?
