Since the beginning of space exploration, more than 500 people have been into space.

Yuri Gagarin was the first human to ever go into space. He did this in April of 1961. Since then, many have followed. I'd like to add some milestones here.

Mark Garneau was the first Canadian to go into space, in 1984
Toyohiro Akiyama was the first Japanese person in space. This was in 1990.
Roberta Bondar was the first Canadian woman in space.  She went to space in 1992.
Christopher Cassidy was the 500th person in space. 
Jean-Loup Chrétien was the first French person in space.
Sigmund Jahn was the first German to go into space.
Liu Yang was the first Chinese woman in space.
John Glen was the first American to orbit the earth, and he was also the oldest person to have been in space.

Sally Ride was the first American woman in space.
Alan Shepard was the first American in space.
Samantha Cristoforetti was the first Italian woman in space.
Pedro Duque was the first Spaniard in space.
Dirk Frimout was the first Belgian in space.

Miroslaw Hermaszewski was the first Polish person to go into space.
Franco Malerba was the first Italian to see space first hand.
